They say that everything has its own special day. Well, the first Wednesday in October is now kale’s day. Yes, October 2nd was National Kale Day! Its founding team is celebrating kale’s health benefits, highlighting its culinary versatility and promoting kale throughout America.

The celebration campaign leaves no stone unturned. Through recipes, fun facts, tools and events, it focuses on giving individuals, families and communities a wide range of options to boost their knowledge of and excitement for kale.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, when you should eat kale and how you should prepare it depends on a number of factors ranging from your unique birth constitution to the season to your present state of alignment. And although we love kale at Ayureka, we recognize that eating it uncooked and unseasoned can easily cause digestive challenges. With that being said, kale has rightfully earned its day in the spotlight as a superfood.

Looking through the materials prepared for this campaign, the “Kale Hero Credo” immediately catches one’s eye:

  • Have Courage—Kale heroes are brave, because they speak out about healthy eating in the face of the adversity, such as the obesity epidemic America is currently facing.
  • Make Sacrifices—Kale heroes sacrifice a little of their time for the big reward of helping their children, community, parents, farmers and their environment.
  • Be Determined—Kale heroes are unflinching in their desire to make the world better, because they walk the walk—or rather “eat the kale”—and always find a way to cook and eat better.
  • Be Responsible—Kale heroes care about what happens to their loved ones, future generations and the health of the planet. By eating a more plant-based diet, shopping at local farmers markets, teaching kids to grow, eat and cook their own food they can save people and our environment one step at a time.
  • Be Knowledgeable—Kale mixed with other superfoods arm the kale hero with a world of nutrition and plenty of energy to support the cause. Learn the basics of kale nutrition and about the special healing molecules in kale.

These guiding ideas hold true for anyone looking to live a more vibrant life in a thriving community on a healthy planet. It takes all five actions to inspire and enact change.
